A Curse Against My Jeans

I curse you, denim boot-cut jeans
May you be damned to the depths of my drawer,
Only to be swept away with the pile of clothes
I will send to Goodwill when I get around to it.
How dare you mock me, denim boot-cut jeans
Refusing to fit like you did that day in the dressing room
May your every fiber be forgotten
May you never earn those stylish rips, tears, and holes
That seem to be the fad these days
We could have made them on our own
But you strangled my waist
You suffocated my thighs
You came up just a little too short
Made me look at your size and question
What had happened to mine, as I stared at my figure
A little longer than usual
Who are you, denim boot-cut jeans
To deny me your services when I need them most
Therefore I curse you
because cursing at you has gotten me nowhere
except frustrated, aggravated, and pantless

Loves Lost and Found

It was good seeing him again
after a long flight and even longer absence
Walking through those double doors
to find his face amidst the crowd
A warm embrace held longer than usual
Pull back, and one more for good measure
Cheek to flushed cheek
Eyes that said “I missed you”
and a subtle smile that said “Everything’s ok”
More was said in the silence
than the hours of catching up that followed
arms linked and bodies close
as if to make up for lost time
the doubts, the sleepless nights
the unreturned calls that made the distance
that much further
Everything found and forgotten
at the baggage claim

i just don't know what to do..... [Apr. 13th, 2005|10:32 pm]
The Broken Heart
-john donne

He is stark mad, whoever says
That he hath been in love an hour,
Yet not that love so soon decays,
But that it can ten in less space devour;
Who will believe me, if i swear
That I have had the plague a year?
Who would not laugh at me, if I should say
I saw a flash of powder burn a day?

Ah, what a trifle is a heart,
If once into love's hands it come!
All other griefs allow a part
To other griefs, and ask themselves but some;
They come to us, but us Love draws;
He swallows us and never chaws;
By him, as by the chain'd shot, whole ranks do die;
He is the tyrant pike, our hearts the fry

If 'twere not so, what did become
Of my heart when i first saw thee?
I brought a heart into the room,
But from the room i carried none with me.
If it had gone to thee, i know
Mine would have taught thine heart to show
More pity unto me; but Love alas!
At one first blow did shiver it as glass

Yet nothing can to nothing fall,
Nor any place be empty quite;
Therefore I think my breast hath all
Those pieces still, though they be not unite;
And now, as broken glasses show
A hundred lesser faces, so
My rags of heart can like, wish, and adore,
But after one such love, can love no more.

Jumping Salt... [Apr. 1st, 2005|12:13 pm]
Well...Just wanted to wish a VERY HAPPY (and slightly belated) BIRTHDAY to Stacy! (sorry i didn't call you yesterday, but i seem to have misplaced your phone number!) Anyhow, I hope your day was awesome!! And SINCE it was your birthday...i have a very special song to sing to you:

OHHHH...I'm picking out a thermos for you...Not an ordinary thermos for you...But the extra best thermos you can buy, with vinyl and stripes and a cup built right in!....I'm picking out a thermos for you, and maybe a barometer too...and what else can I buy so on me you'll rely...A rear end thermometer tooooooo.

I bet you were expecting Happy Birthday, eh? SUPLISE!! haha.... Miss you stace.

Now that all of you Non-"Jerk" Lovers think i'm a total psychopath...I shall bid you farewell. sorry i haven't been updating much..but life is busy. I'll post a summer update as soon as my plans are finalized. hope all is well with you.

Take care kids.

a night in hollywood [Feb. 27th, 2005|11:22 pm]
Tonight was awesome. Katie, Mike, Eric, Ashley, Justin, and i all went to this thing called "Hollywood Night" at one of the dining halls on campus. It was basically like our own little Tech Oscar celebration. We all got dressed up (a very very rare occasion for katie and me) and walked over there around 5:30. It was actually FREEZING cold outside...and katie and i were wearing heels...so yeah..that was interesting to say the least. They had a reception with sushi (yum!) and drinks and such and we met up with a bunch of other IV people. The food was suprisingly wonderful. It was a 4 course meal. Check out the menu:

First Course:
A Tataki of Shrimp and Scallops with Ginger sauce, served with fresh cantaloupe and purple plum and pomegranate coulis

Second Course:
Tamarind-glazed Lamb Loin Chop with a dried apricot Relish

Third Course:
Grilled Kobe strip steak served with cold water lobster tail and lobster mashed potatoes, thin beans and a natural pan glaze

Fourth Course:
Fresh Raspberries served in a chocolate tulip shell with white chocolate mousse and a strawberry balsalmic sauce

It was delicious and definitely a nice change to the normal dining hall food.
They even put little goodie bags out for everyone with candy, popcorn, a mini "Hokie Award," a blockbuster gift certificate, and sweet black sunglasses. haha. it was great.

Now i'm absolutely exhausted (from walking back in those heels) and full from all that food....
good times though...i wish we could do stuff like that more often.
check out the pictures from the night:

" I mean that they should not play life, or study it merely, while the community supports them at this expensive game, but earnestly live it from beginning to end.  How could youths better learn to live than by at once trying the experiment of living?  Methinks this would exercise their minds as much as mathematics.  If I wished a boy to know something about the arts and sciences, for instance, I would not pursue the common course, which is to send him into the neighborhood of some professor, where any thing is professed and practiced but the art of life;--to survey the world through a telescope or microscope, and never with his natural eye; to study chemistry, and not learn how his bread is made ..."

perforated at the neck [Nov. 28th, 2004|07:16 pm]
[mood | sore]
[music |Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt- The Mars Volta]

Well, thanksgiving break is over and i have to say, it's nice to be back at school. weird how that works. I forgot how great it is to have freedom to do what you want when you want..no curfew, no checking in.
That said, i did have a wonderful time back at home and much fun was had. Last saturday I went down to William & Mary with nick, mike, and jespah to see Miyagi play at a battle of the bands down there. i got to see Hannah and jimmy, which was fabulous as usual, as well as mullin, garreth, and mark who also came to see the show. Haha...the show was interesting, considering that pretty much all the other bands were Indie Rock. I imagine all the kids were terrified when mike started screaming. heh. oh well....it was fun, especially just hanging out with the guys. This one band there was absolutely ridiculous...the guitarist was just like "who's hot?" and more or less pointed to himself. What the...?? I'm SO glad Dr.Thunder didn't win, cuz that would just be a shame.
Nick had to go home on sunday since he didn't get mon. or tues. off....so i ended up working both days and making a little cash. There is never a dull moment at Flowers 'n' Ferns. I swear, those ladies gossip like it's their job. I just smile and nod and hope i don't do anything to make them upset. haha. I'd hate to hear what they say about me behind my back.
Nick and i went to see the movie Alexander. wow. what a waste. I mean, the fight scenes were pretty awesome (and gruesome), but the movie was freakin' 3 hours and 10 minutes!! it dragged on and on and on. And what made it even crazier was that...well, let's just say that Alexander took a liking toward men. so yeah. *thumbs down*
Thanksgiving was small this year. Just me, mom, dad, my aunt connie, and my cousin brittany. (and dallas of course who was constantly at our feet hoping we'd drop our plate and give her a nice turkey feast). Britt and i left after dinner to get Casey and we all went to see Napoleon Dynamite at University Mall for $4. Sweet. I love that movie so much. and hanging out with the cousins was fun indeed.
Saturday afternoon i headed over to Katie B's to watch the VT vs. UVA game. WOOT! GO HOKIES. 24-10. We pretty much rock. We called some guy from katie's work that likes UVA and left a message of all of us doing the turkey gobble. i know, we're psychos..but, hey...we WON, so that's all that matters. Let's hope we kill miami next week.
Of course the highlight of the week was seeing Miyagi play the battle of the bands at Jaxx on saturday night. EVERYONE was there. Miyagi fans both young and old came to see them play...even Nick's grandparents were there. Lawson brought a great picture of Pat Morita to hold up during the set. haha. what a funny kid. and all of us faithfully acted out the lyrics to Revolute and moshed our little hearts out. speaking of moshing, i do believe i sprained my neck and it hurts like the dickens...but it was WELL worth it. I seriously think they put on a great show. the vocals (aside from the stupid mics screwing up) sounded SOO good. i know that everyone pretty much assumes its my job to say that they did well no matter what...but to be completely honest, i REALLY do think they are amazing. their new material is SO good. JAXX pisses me off so much. they don't know anything, seriously. and it makes me mad that they have so much control. Basically you have to be on their good side for them to do anything for you....it's not about the music at all...and if it is, it's only about the music THEY like. it's stupid. I say we revolt. we can all dress up like Daniel-san and go in there with like numchucks or something. all in favor?? but, really...miyagi, you guys rock and everyone knows it. stick with it. trust me, you guys have what it takes....plus an obsessed fan (me)...so what more could you ask for ;)

It was absolutely wonderful getting to spend so much time with nick. i missed him so much. Just being around him makes me smile. i'm so thankful that i have a boyfriend i can rely on and go to for support....he really pulled through for me this week, and i appreciate it more than he knows. i've had a lot on my mind lately...a lot that i have to deal with and sort out. nick just has a way of calming me and making things a lot more bearable. i don't know what i'd do without him.

Finals in 2 weeks and then Christmas break. i have so much to do in the meanwhile. OH!! before i forget. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY EMILY!!! i'm so sorry i didn't post it on your birthday, but my computer at home was being dumb. i hope it was AWESOME.

Well kids, i must get some sleep. NOT looking forward to classes tomorrow. poo. It was so good seeing everyone back at home...PLEASE keep in touch, and i'll try to cut down on the massive posts by posting more often. deal?
take care.

by the way...the mars volta is amazing.

starry starry night [Nov. 7th, 2004|02:32 am]
[mood | pleased]
[music |Flogging Molly- The Light of a Fading Star]

This weekend has been awesome so far. Friday night we had our second APEX session and it went really well. Kinda a small turn out compared to last time, but it's not really about how many people come. The songs we sang really spoke to me this week. maybe because they're just awesome songs...but mostly because i've really been missing God lately. i dunno, i've had a lot on my mind this past week, so it felt good to just lay that all down and really worship.

Katie and Keith dropped in for Apex for a bit, but left after like 10 minutes because i guess they decided to go to West Virginia early. A whole bunch of people headed to Ken's cabin this weekend, but i had some stuff to get done, so i didn't end up going. haha...it was kinda funny, because i definitely didn't bring my keys with me, so it was nice a suprise to get katie's message saying "we decided to leave tonight, see you sunday." oops. kinda feel bad for the RA that had to let me in at like 1:00 in the morning. oh well, it's their job. things are always a little quiet and lonely without katie. she's super, she really is.

anywho, after APEX me, mike, and andrew (from IV) decided to go get a milkshake, cuz my throat was killing me....but when we got to Joe's diner, they were out of chocolate! what the crap!...so we decided to just make our OWN milkshakes. We stopped by Krogers and got some milk and icecream then headed over to andrew's to blend us up some milkshaky goodness. mmmm. yum. and we saved like 8 bucks, so it was definitely worth it. The night was still young and it was Andrew's birthday, so we decided to go off-roading. haha...it was awesome. Pretty much every puddle/small pond we came upon mike had to get out and see how deep it was. We pretty much drove for about an hour into the woods having NO clue where we were going, only to realize we couldn't go any further and had to turn around and come back. go figure. it was great though. and the sky was absolutely GORGEOUS! The night was so dark and the entire sky was covered in stars.

slept in til 12:30 today, which was wonderful. that's probably the latest i've slept in for a reaaally really long time. I guess i needed the rest. Julie took me to the Roanoke mall, which is about 10 times bigger than the blacksburg mall. We went to best buy and i went crazy. haha...i swear, i can control myself when it comes to buying clothes and stuff...but get me somewhere they have CDs and i go nuts. Got Flogging Molly's "within a mile of home" which is super. they rock. wanted to get about 20 other CD's but i need to wait until i get some money. i really wanted to get Mars Volta...but i couldn't find it, and julie wanted to get goin. so that's a shame. hopefully i will pick that up soon.

tonight me, mike, andrew, caroline, dan, and a BUNCH of people from Intervarsity all went out to the New River and had a Bonfire! (haha...reminds me of the good ol' days back in Benton). We had a blast though. We cooked s'mores and hot dogs and sat around and played guitar. twas good times indeed. pictures shall be posted soon, hopefully. afterward, me, caroline, mike, andrew, and andrew's brother went back to andrew's and watched some Family Guy and ate cookies. it doesn't get much better than that, my friends. seriously.

wow. it's already 3 in the morning...which means it's Nov. 7... which means HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDREW PIERCE!!!! you should be getting something in the mail soon, once i figure out what the heck your address is. Hope your birthday is superb though! :-D

all right, my dear friends. i shall retire for the evening. take care.

side note: tube socks are warm and nice.
that is all.

spibberish [Oct. 29th, 2004|02:40 am]
[mood | bouncy]
[music |some random song about badgers?]

so tonight i was over in mike and drew's room attempting to get some help on spanish homework. in the short time that i'm away from the computer, eric jumps in and writes THIS:

I AM SO DUMB, I MEAN REALLY, ON the dumb scale, I am at least a 12 out of 3.  You know, if you were to add vinegar to a cake in the proportion of 12:3, reduced of course to 4:1, you would have possibly the most turtle friendly cake ever.  I mean turtles would be flocking to your door much like mice in mating season.  Can you imagine the exhilaration?  The pure joy and poetry?  I mean, I’m sure you have not heard the works of Nathan Slobberbottome, the most celebrated turtle poet in the history of turtle literature.  Many people have contested that the finest exothermic reactions stem from such things as the combustion of Dr. Thunder.  Did you know, that in 1999 and ≤, exactly 848308373290208u398383939093yhhf99hf2h2 people died of spontaneous combustion directly related to the chemical influence of Dr. Thunder, a close relative of Dr. Frankl.  According to his celebrated work, appropriately titled Once Upon a Windstorm, (you might recognize his daughter, Ovid) Dr. Frankl developed a formula involving both Plank’s constant and Avagadro’s number to accurately predict the behavior of small hedgehogs in the presence of electric fields.
I’m sure that you are now wondering, “What does this mean for my life?  How can I apply this wisdom to my everyday living situation?”  Well, Miss Shelby, I am exceedingly exuberant that you permitted your thought process to deviate from comprehendible and coherent thought into the realm of the theory of chaos.  If you were to save but one gram of dead skin cells each day, the entire race of literary turtles would be eternally grateful for your contribution to the betterment of society.  This is all I have to say, I think your options are clear, and advise you to acquiesce to reasonable request, a plea, if you will (or if you won’t).  I charge you to join with all humanity in celebrating the Chinese New Year this year.  Chow Young Fat would personally send you a birthday card.  Consider if you will, the lilies of the valley… with that, I will leave you in your ignorance of Spanish jibberish…or shall I call it Spibberish, a much more fitting nomenclature for an uncivilized idea.

HAHAHA. i'm so confused. that's awesome though. i'm seriously contemplating just turning that in as my homework....haha.
those guys are so much fun to hang out with. it's very rare that people these days can just hang out and do absolutely nothing...which is more or less what we do when i go over there, aside from the random towel snapping contests and burying me alive under a pile of crap (those smelly shoes were NOT appreciated, by the way). mike made me some orange tea from Paraguay which was by far the most tasty tea EVER . tea is so underrated...seriously.

goin home tomorrow. looking forward to rocking out with Miyagi. MI-YA-GI! i swear, those kids are so talented. and to top it off...some of my best friends. doesn't get much better than that. i'd still like them even if their music sucked, but luckily they freakin' rock. everyone who is in town this weekend should catch them at Woodson's cafe thingy ma jig. call me if you're interested in coming.

well, my friends. it's LATE. GEEZ! and i have classes tomorrow. which means i must bid you all adieu. hope all is well.
sweet dreams.

[mood | thoughtful]

VT's Homecoming was yesterday and we basically slaughtered Florida A&M. I think the score was...62 to 0? yeah. way to go Hokies! It was actually FREEZING out, so none of the guys painted up and we all ended up leaving pretty much after halftime anyway. The highlight of the game..JOHN EMAMI made HOMECOMING KING!! That's so awesome. He's like the coolest guy...really nice and really involved. He knows everyone, i swear. Apparently this is the first Homecoming King for a long time that hasn't been a Frat Boy. I sat with the Navs and we were all screaming our lungs out for him. I'm so glad he won though, seriously. he deserved it.

Katie went home this weekend, so i've been flying solo. I miss her already. Man, she's the best. I have the coolest roommate. It's crazy how well we get along. I honestly can't say how blessed i am that she's rooming with me, because it just makes the entire experience that much better. We're on the floor laughing pretty much everyday..it's awesome. Haha, malcolm called her my sister today randomly. I thought that was funny. he was like, "Well...you might as well be." Works for me. :)

so yesterday my friend mike taught me how to drive a stick-shift. haha. I'll admit, i was reaaally nervous at just the idea of it, but thankfully mike was a good teacher and had a lot of patience, so things worked out well. believe it or not, i didn't do all that poorly. We drove around in the mall parking lot for a few minutes and then he said i was ready for the actual road, so we went to some back road that ended up being SUPER windy, but pretty lacking in traffic. Once you get going it's really not that bad at all, and thankfully i didn't do anything to ruin his car. I DID stall out a few times when we were trying to back up, but other than that it was pretty smooth sailing. i have NO idea when i'll ever drive a stick-shift, but i guess it's a good thing to know.

well, i've got some reading to do, so i better get on that. it's been a good weekend. i feel productive and well rested. my computer/printer is still broken, so that's a problem that needs to be remedied soon. i hope i can find someone that can understand what the heck is wrong with it, because i've pretty much tried everything with no success. ug.

hope all is well with you fine people. drop me a line, i would love to hear from you.
later kids.

[music |Emery-the ponytail parades]

WOW. tonight was awesome. EMERY ROCKED THE HOUSE at VT. oh yeah. it was amazing. ok..so here's the line up: Down to Earth Approach, From First to Last, Brazil, and Emery. what a great show. BUT it gets even better. i just recently joined VTU (virginia tech union) which means that not only did i get to GO to the concert, i was on the freakin' STAFF!! i even got a cool shirt that pretty much got me wherever i wanted to go without being questioned. how cool is that?
ok, so i just stroll in and am hanging out by the Emery merch table and see Devin, one of the singers/guitarists in the band. i didn't want to be one of those crazy obsessed fans, so i just chilled for a bit, and then noticed he was folding shirts so i offered to help. He was like "yeah man! i would love that." So i got to chat with him awhile, and found out he's like the coolest guy and super nice. when i finished folding, i wanted to buy a shirt, but definitely didn't bring all that much money, so he was like, "Shelby, it's cool...i'm gonna give you a discount." sweet. So then he asked me to help run the Merch table, so that rocked! Then later, i got to play piano with the lead singer from From First to Last. haha. he's one crazy little guy. he was cool though. in fact, all the guys in the bands seemed really nice.
the show stinkin rocked though. i had a blast. i definitely went CRAZY during Emery though and was moshing all over the place. really wish all you guys from Fairfax could've been there, it was awesome. haha. my friend talked to me after the show and was like, "dude...you were going nuts! i didn't know girls went crazy like that" haha. i took it as a compliment.
the best is...after the show, i got to help break down the set and stuff amd talk with all the guys in the band. Emery signed a CD for me and gave me a free shirt! how sweet is that??? man those guys rock.
i'm so hyped up on adrenaline right now, it's not even funny. I had such a blast though. i think VTU is going to try to get Thursday and Underoath to come play here...so we'll see. if we do, oh man, that would rock my socks.
um. i defintely have to get up in like 5 hours, so i've gotta get to bed. so much more is going on here...so i'll try to update again soon.
later kids.

another victory for the women folk [Sep. 18th, 2004|01:06 am]
Ok...so you know how at little group functions they always ask for volunteers to come up and do some silly little game?? yeah. And you know how they're usually pretty innocent and not very hard?? USUALLY? yeah. Well tonight Katie, Mackie, and I went to visit the "Navigators" (another on campus ministry group) and they called for two volunteers. WELLL.....the prize was a mint cheesecake, and if you know me at all, you know that i'm pretty much obsessed with cheesecake..so of COURSE i was ALL OVER being one of the two volunteers. SO....they sit us down in chairs, back to back....and i'm thinking...hm...i wonder what we're going to have to do. And at that moment....they pull out a bag of jalapeno peppers and place it on the table. and these are not small peppers, guys. these are the full 4 inch long, 2 inch in diameter, SEED PACKED peppers. The quest was to see who could eat more in a time of 90 seconds...it was me versus this guy named paul. So we sat down, and we had "feeders" to help us stuff our faces. So they call time and we just start SHOVING jalapenos down my throat...and guys...i'm not going to lie...it BURNED... like WHOA!! These are true blue jalapenos. I gagged once or twice...thought i was going to lose my cookies. There were seeds flying everywhere...KAtie, being the great roommate she is, was screaming STUFF IT IN!! MORE! GO! When the buzzer went off i shoved one last piece in my mouth and swallowed it down. The results... i ate 3 and a half...he ate 4. *sad face* BUT...i didn't have any time to react to my loss because the second we stopped, my mouth caught on fire. I'll be honest....i thought i was going to die. I chugged down like 2 glasses of water and tried to eat some cake to get the taste away...but my mouth BURNED LIKE THE DICKENS! I started sweating....my eyes were watering...yeah...i thought it was the end of me. The things i'll do for cheesecake, SHEESH! but anyhow...the best part, the BEST part of it all....was that my lips got all swollen because they were COVERED in jalapeno juice. I kid you not...they looked like i had just gotten injections into my lips. SOOO BIG. As much as it hurt...i couldn't help but just laugh at how absolutely ridiculous i looked/felt. it was great. OH! but get this. Even tho i technically lost, Paul came up to me afterwards and told me he was Lactose intolerant anyway and wanted me to have the cheesecake! WOOT! What a nice guy....haha! So...i guess my pain was worth something afterall. :)

Oh...get this tho. When i get back from the session, i noticed that my eye makeup had run like crazy because i was crying and all from the jalapenos....so i lift my finger up to fix my eye and...yeah...definitely forgot that my hands were still covered in jalapeno juice. hahahahaha. i am SUCH an idiot. My eyes started watering like the niagra falls. It was insane. I was screaming bloody murder....i thought my eyes were literally burning inside my head. man oh man. I'm a clever one. *remembers that there is cheesecake in the fridge* *smiles*

After that whole fiasco...and a few others that happened today, but would take way to long to explain right now, Katie Mackie and i went up to the 5th floor crossover where Intervarsity was having a little shindig. It was good times. They were playing some russian foot tag game....which seemed relatively cool...but considering i hate feet and hate people touching them....NOT the game for me. SO...we grabbed mike and a few other guys and started up a game of Battle of the Sexes. haha. what a funny game. tho...let me just say right now that even I didn't know half of the girls questions. I love how all the "girl questions" for the guys had to do with cooking and sewing and stuff....and all the guys questions were about tools and the sports. hmmmm...stereotype much?? but i guess that's just how it has to be for a game like that. anyhow...the guys got SOOOO into...and it was actually scary how many of the questions the guys actually knew the answers to. haha. BUT in the end...the women prevailed. of COURSE.

i can't get to sleep. i'm not tired at all. maybe i'll take this time to finish one or all of the three books i'm reading right now. Life of Pi is so good. even the second time around. soooo good. those of you that haven't read it...shame on you!

Well kids. I would love to stay and chat, but...i think all those jalapenos are giving me a stomach ache...so there's really only one solution to that. MINT CHEESECAKE!! WOOT!
...oh guilty pleasures, how you fatten me.

without anyone noticing. I'm like an ambulance
